Be your pupils’ friend by Naoufel Zouidi

Pupils are strongly influenced by the way their teachers treat them. If you succeed to create a friendly learning atmosphere you will find it very easy to transfer information and therefore achieve your objectives. A teacher who is always shouting at his young audience is like a master who obliges his slaves to obey his orders, but our role as Language teachers is to make our pupils speak, use and communicate through English. Communication never means “Must and Must not”. It is a system that highlights exchange and discussion but avoids obligation and punishment. Try to forget about your daily life problems when you start working because pupils are not responsible for a salary delay or a family dispute. They come to school to learn and meet teachers who explain lessons and replace parents for eight hours a day. So be the father/mother you are teaching about and help pupils know the meaning of adjectives such as helpful, understanding, open-minded, affectionate, caring and friendly. In that way even pupils who do not like the subject will make efforts to take part in your lesson and make it successful. It is simply because it is their friend’s lesson. So be your pupils’ friend.

Just for fun
•Teacher: What's the longest word in the English language?
Pupil: ‘Smiles’ - because there is a mile between the first and last letters!
•Teacher: What is the plural of mouse?
Pupil: Mice
Teacher : Good, now what's the plural of baby?
Pupil : Twins!

  1. Hi
I really liked your article , this is what I really want to tell to every teacher , learning the language is part and parcel of loving the teacher , too , we like it or not .If they love you , cherish you , see in you their confidant , they'll try hard not to deceive you in any situation , in any instance of learning they'll try to show you how much they are doing well to please you .
This is the same for me , my colleague , hope we will start a discussion between teachers from different areas to share experiences how to foster these noble relationships with our learners , our children .When we will feel them as our own children , we will be always ready to listen to them , to care for them and they will certainly learn from us !
Thanks for raising this question !

  2. Hi Faten,
Thanks for your comment..It is really nice to have a friendly relationship with pupils since they will do their best to help their teacher "especially when the inspector visits" ...(of course I'm just joking)..Be close to your pupils and you will notice the difference..It may be strange at first but then it will be a great pleasure and you will enjoy teaching..Thanks again and never hesitate to enrich our forum..Looking forward to hearing from you..

  3. Hi,
I really like this article because this is really what I believe in.I was advised at the beginning of the year as a novice teacher to be careful because there isn't a big age difference between me and my students , I was advised to be strict .But I chose to be their friend and now I really feel their love and I remember that one day I had a head ache and they noticed that and they made no noise, if one talks very loud they tell him/her shhhhht miss is ill ...I really love them and am happy with my relationship with them.

    Thanks for this article :)
